What to do when your teacher's teaching style does not fit your learning style?

Below is a conversation I had with a student over Facebook (I call the student XYZ to protect her identity). I post it here for the potential benefits of some of my students and colleagues. (Yes. I have obtained permission from the student.)

----------------------------------------

XYZ: dear dear professor!~~

KF: Hi...

XYZ: emm...you must forget me! haha I know!~

KF: OK. Who are you?

XYZ: .......XYZ/YZX/XZY which can touch ur memory?

KF: Apple?

XYZ: a????

KF: Haha....

XYZ: keke....haha. just get used to use facebook and find u online and。。。。happy birthday!~

XYZ: it must be that i am not excellent enough for u to memorize me ==!

KF: My birthday has passed. I do not always remember excellent students.

XYZ: ......congratulations never out of date!

KF: Birthday is not very important for me.

XYZ: really?! emmm..... is that because ur excellent students r quantative ><
NOT IMPORTANT?!....emm.......ok then let me put into this way: Happy ... New Year?

KF: I see that you are trying to find something not so important to blow water.

XYZ: = =!= =!= =!

KF: How are you doing this semester? Do you enjoy your ABCD course?

XYZ: NO!NONONONONONONONO! ><><><>! I can stand the course of ABCD, though I dont get the point= =! BUT the course of LMNOP, I cannot stand it anymore!! I know I should be more careful with my words but I do find that.....maybe the only way for me to learn better for these two courses this semester is......self-study?!?!

KF: Who are the teachers?

XYZ: OMG! I almost get cried when I think about it. LMNOP is taught by W; ABCD is taught by S.

KF: They are both good teachers! I think!

XYZ: They just.....they just...emmm......not make it clear? I dont know....Just cannot get enough things from their lecture! ><

KF: They are willing to help students learn! If you do not understand, ask them as soon as possible. Visit them at their office. Ask the TAs. Don't let your problems accumulate.

XYZ: Yes!! I know they r kind and responsible.....just ..... emmm u know if u hv valuable problems, that must base on u hv learned it. Then the questions is, the first learning experience cannot come from their teaching!

KF: You need to learn to be a student! A responsible student! A responsible student will ask questions and help teachers to become better teachers.

XYZ: I hv changed my learning way to self-read-textbooks and ask-teacher-questions= =! I know it's not a good student's behavior >< !! I cannot stand myself either!

KF: And, thus the student helps himself/herself to learn better.

XYZ: I see.....

XYZ: Yeah I should try this way. Maybe u r right!

XYZ: Avoiding changes nothing.... I should face it and ask them and solve the problem in a positive attitude

KF: If you can learn only when you have good teachers, you will learn very little during your university life.

XYZ: I just thought teachers should all be like u!!

KF: At HKU, you will run into teacher of different styles. Some will fit your learning style, some will not.

XYZ: especially such a famous university..... isnt it necessary to have good teachers?

KF: You have to learn how to change your learning style to fit their teaching style. I said different styles.

XYZ: so what is their teaching style?

KF: I did not say whether they are good or bad.

XYZ: Yup!! Sorry for my word

KF: Styles are styles.

XYZ: Maybe because I cannot figure out their style, I couldnt get to my learning style?

XYZ: ....emmm..... But I really cannot find their style correctly I think......

KF: Like personality. You may not like all people you run into. But, you can learn to communicate with them.

XYZ: Communicate?

KF: You do not have to find their style. You only have to develop a way to learn from them -- given their personality and style. Some teachers teach more effectively when students ask questions. Some teachers will not perform when students interrupt the lecture.

XYZ: is it... emm....I think I quite get what u mean...... Yes!! I should develop a new style of learning!

KF: Some teachers can explain much better when it is one-on-one.

XYZ: ok!!!! I feel more confident about the two courses now!

KF: The problem of most students is they are not willing to "force" the teachers to teach well. Students have the right to ask questions! Teachers have the obligation to answer them!

XYZ: Yes! Exactly!! We tend to accept the way of teaching with complaint instead of forcing it for change. ok !!!I will try next week >

XYZ: Dear dear professor, thank you so much!!!!!! Sorry for ur valuable time haha~

XYZ: Got it!~ I will also expain it to my friends~ And..... Wish us all good luck for every new day in our life~

KF: Very good! Try to focus on learning! Not grades!

XYZ: YES!! That exactly what I learned in last semester! LOVE U!!!!~

------
A follow up:
Following my suggestion, XYZ made a list of questions and went to ask the TA. The TA helped answered them all.
